Why is it called the Dead River anyway?
The Dead River apparently got its name from the native Indians, who called it that because of its slow current. (pre-dam of course.) With the dam on the river, the releases are anything BUT slow! The Dead River is the west branch of the Kennebec River, and joins the Kennebec River at The Forks, Maine. The town of The Forks got its name (you guessed it) because it is located at the confluence of two major rivers; the Kennebec and the Dead. More area history is coming, stay tuned!
